Not Your Average EDM Festival
Over the weekend, scattered over 9 venues and two days, Williamsburg was astir with avid EDM followers who turned out for Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival. Set over in a 20 block radius, the best turntablists from Brooklyn and abroad showcased their beats in established venues that included the Output, Hall of Williamsburg, Baby’s All Right, and Glasslands who will sadly be closing their doors at the end of this year. BEMF has been around since 2008, but isn’t like other large-scale EDM festivals who cater solely to devotees of P.L.U.R.: attendees were a mix of the previous, industry professionals, and Brooklyn’s hip. Boasting a 6am end time both days including after-parties, tickets at individual venues were snapped up quickly – although few splurged on pricier two-day passes.
Memorable acts included established masters Booka Shade, Morgan Luis and the next Porter Robinson, Lewis Jankel who goes by Shift K3Y, the 21-year-old who’s Single “Torch” peaked at number 3 on the UK Singles Chart.
My personal favorite was the live performance by vocalist/DJ Little Boots, whose Madonna-esque look and twin supporting vocalists made for a great show.
The cutting edge in electronic music was showcased in North Brooklyn last weekend, and even included daytime industry panels reminding us that DJs are more than performers who ‘just press play’.
