CMJ Top 5 Bands to See
PORCHES. a native Brooklyn band made up of Ronald Paris (Aaron Maine) and Frankie Cosmos (Greta Kline) among others is easily the most anticipated band of CMJ for us at WERW.
Just coming off the release of a 7” on Terrible Records, and having staked a claim in the indie community with the release of Slow Dance In The Cosmos, through the infinitely growing Exploding in Sound Records, PORCHES. has shown us all that they are the band to watch this year at CMJ, and they definitely have everyone's ear.
Chicago young guns, Twin Peaks, are taking CMJ 2014 by storm, playing 6 shows over their 3 day stay in NYC. Mixing classic 60’s blues rock with a modern, fuzzy, fast-paced sound, the group has found remarkable, well deserved, success. We are excited to see these rookie rockers blow us away, hopefully more then once, during our week.
Potty Mouth, a group of very rad chicks channel a well balanced combination of The Breeders and Sleater- Kinney, but with the rock and roll influence knocked up a notch. Coming off their release of Hell Bent through Old Flame Records, and a successful tour with Syracuse's very own Perfect Pussy, these girls have a lot to offer. We are excited to see them in action and look forward for more because we here have found our true CMJ girl crush in Potty Mouth.
Notorious for her rise from pizza delivery girl to rock star, Courtney Barnett is making a short appearance in NYC during CMJ. The founder of Milk! Records will be in town Wednesday night to play hits from her album The Double EP: Sea of Split Peas at Webster hall. Courtney Barnett has some of the most easily accessible stories in indie music right now. These told with brilliantly arranged guitar soundscapes shows us why she is one of the most exciting up-and-coming artists in indie music, let alone the music marathon.
L.A. duo, Girlpool, have come to be recognized in the indie scene only recently as they anticipate a theoretical debut at this years CMJ conference. We love these two girls not only because of their college radio affiliation with KXLU, but because they take a really unique approach to the punk duo concept. Cleo and Harmony displayed in their Blah Blah Blah Single that they can be just as punk rock as any guy while keeping it extremely simplistic. They are rebels that are willing to work, as they are also playing 6 shows in their 4 day stay. These girls will creep up on you, be sure to keep your ears and eyes open.
xoxo
