College Radio Day
Guess what party people?
National College Radio Day is Friday!
Did you know WE are a college radio station? Cause we are. It's rad.
College Radio Day was started to encourage people to tune into college radio as many believe stations like WERW are the last remaining ambassadors of creative radio programming, free from the constrictions of having to be commercially viable, and a place where those involved in its programming believe passionately in its mission. College radio is the only free live medium brave enough to play unsigned, local, and independent artists on a regular basis. Indeed, many famous and successful bands today, owe their initial break to being played on college radio. It is the day college radio comes together.
At WERW we are strong believers in all of these mantras and back them up, not only because we love our cause but because we also like to think we are pretty kool people and if we think we are kool then other people might start to believe it too.
WERW was started in 1985 and since has grown from a small division of UU to the University's own independent free format station. We have over 80 DJs that we super thankful for and a super dedicated staff that lives breathes and pretty much sleeps in the station. We are proud to bring the University "What Everyone Really Wants."
So in the spirit of college radio day, we encourage everyone to tune in to our special Friday programming, which will end with an ultra cool radio show from 11-Midnight hosed by US, and we think were kool so you should too.
At the end of the day, college radio not only affects the industry positively, it changes the people that are involved with it for the better too. Caitlin and I would never have met if it wasn't for WERW, and that is the case with many of my other friends. I'm sure I would have met other people who would have been "cool" but there has always been something special about running a radio station with my friends, that just so happen to be my colleagues. I know that this feeling of community is not just isolated to WERW, having friends at other stations, and knowing the inclusive power of radio, so I think College Radio Day is also a day for us to appreciate the institution that has served us in more ways then we can thank. I will never be the same because of my college radio station, what about you?
xx
